Queer speculative fiction with themes of polyamory, surveillance technology and non-heteronormativity

Set in a near-future where marriage and monogamy have become outmoded relics of the past, people can find compatible matches by wearing special bangles. Mingling surveillance technology with optimized dating and commodified selfhood, COLOUR FIELD explores what happens when the only marriage left standing is the one between state and big tech. With so many possible matches a wrist’s breadth away, will the quest to find ‘the one’ disappear altogether? Or will the desperation to meaningfully connect amidst fickle emotions consolidate its appeal?

In a fictional network of cities called Colour Field, residents wear special-coloured bangles. The so-called ‘Banglers’ form the majority elite who can afford these devices that display wearers’ sexual pheromones through colour. Made by the eponymous Colour Field tech giant, the bangles’ USP is that they help users identify potential matches through immediate and unambiguous visual cues. Banglers refer to the readily available literature and speculation on the meanings behind the 250 colourways to study prospective partners’ lifestyles, personalities, and outlooks. Ironically, as finding ‘the one’ has become easier than ever, people have increasingly gravitated towards casual and fleeting relationships. It’s still no utopia, with issues like ageism, pretty-privilege, ableism and virtue-signalling persisting, but at least the question of attraction seems resolved. Its only threat? The circulation of counterfeit bangles impugning Colour Field’s promise. Ahn Ryu-ji works in Colour Field’s crisis-management team. Despite resonating with the company’s service and polyamorous MO, we meet her stuck in a long-term monogamous relationship with a man who doesn’t fulfil her. Her world is suddenly shaken when the company sends her to investigate the mysterious death of a male Bangler. When his bangle is exposed as a counterfeit, with several more dupes found in his possession, rumours jeopardizing Colour Field’s authority start to spread. Bored and disenchanted, Ryu-ji tries on one of the fake bangles. Just for fun. Soon after, she meets a female bartender, Jang Eun-jo, and is seized by emotions she’s never felt before. As her involvement in the case deepens and complexifies, including the discovery of a family secret, will Ryu-Jin exercise her agency outside Colour Field’s prescriptive panopticon?

Offering though-provoking and familiar-sounding insights into how we date now and where we could be going – from the obsession with type and self-typification reflected in young Koreans’ enthusiasm for Myers-Briggs to astrology’s chokehold on Western Gen-Zers – Colour Field balances playfulness with discernment to demonstrate how we often look elsewhere for confirmation and approval of our choices.

Park’s work spans various genres including novels, cartoons, and illustrations. Park made her debut as a writer when she won the first Cubic Note Short Story Award. She has authored books such as Samagwiui Nara (The Land of the Mantis), Jisangui Yeojadeul (Women of Earth), Jumadeung Imjong Yeonguso (Light on a Running Horse), Segaeui Bam (Three Nights) among many others and co-authored books such as Cheonnyeonmanyeon Sal Geot Gatji? (You Think You’ll Live Forever?), Urineun I Byeoleul Tteonagiro Haesseo (We Decided to Leave This Planet), and Dangsin Gyeotui Papiyong (Papillon by Your Side). She received the Grand Prize in the 2nd Korea SF Award in the novella and short story category for Samaguiui Nara (The Land of the Mantis) and Excellence in the novel category in the 6th Korea SF Award for Jisangui Yeojadeul (Women of Earth). She is a member of “sf x f,” a project group that studies science fiction and feminism.
