Finding New Meaning in Life at Seventy,

Kim Chang-wan’s Humanistic Essays on Becoming the Adult We Aspire to Be

Kim Chang-wan—a frontman of the legendary band Sanulrim, celebrated for creating some of the most unique music in Korean pop history; an actor who has appeared in over 100 works; and a beloved radio DJ who shares moments of everyday life with countless listeners. As a towering figure in Korean pop culture, Kim presents the revised and expanded edition of his first collection of essays.

Originally published 20 years ago and long out of print, this book unveils his candid reflections on life, revealing a philosophy that resonates deeply, free from embellishment or pretense.

Kim’s words are as unadorned as his lyrics and as warm as his radio monologues. Just as generations of listeners have found comfort and inspiration in his radio show openings, the deeply personal stories within Now I Can See tenderly resonate with readers, touching hearts with their lyrical simplicity.

Why revisit essays written in his fifties with the eyes of a seventy-year-old? Because life, even after 20 years, remains filled with moments when meaning finally reveals itself—moments of “now I can see.” The title Now I Can See is an ode to these moments, celebrating the newfound understanding of life’s significance.

Amid the whirlwind of modern living, the book brings to light the tender affections for family, friends, and neighbors, and the innocent wonder of childhood memories brimming with curiosity and dreams. Through stories of mundane daily life—work, love, longing, and the chaotic beauty of relationships—Kim’s essays rekindle emotions and memories often overlooked.

Gratitude, solitude, joy, regret, nostalgia, warmth, and tenderness—these quiet, subtle emotions are revealed as the true essence of life. Kim’s heartfelt reflections remind us to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters. In a world where we rush toward success and happiness, his words offer unvarnished solace and gentle encouragement to our restless hearts.

Author Bio 작가 소개

Kim made his debut with the rock band Sanullim in 1977, shaking the era with experimental and original music. Since 1978, he has hosted a radio show each year, borrowing stories of many . Among these, he gathered the manuscripts for "It’s a Beautiful Morning. This is Kim Chang-wan," which he has hosted for 23 years, and published them as "It’s a Circle Even If It’s Squished." He hopes the book will bring comfort to those who have entrusted him with their stories and help them find small hopes in their squished daily lives.
