Description 작품 소개

Gu Byeong-Mo’s works include various genres from young adult literature, literary fiction and genre fiction. In this, her second collection of short stories, She tenaciously observes today’s social maladies and disastrous life in Korea and then keenly describes the psychology of her characters. As the title with multiple meanings suggests, this collection embodies not only the selfishness of those who would be happy as long as it is not they who suffer, but also the self-reflection of those who would maintain their integrity as long as they themselves do not look away from human suffering under any circumstances. Her unique writing style, which is the successful outcome of a variety of elements including the reality of Korea, philosophy, myths, scriptures, fables and folk tales from around the world, has reached its peak performance in this collection of short stories. The social circumstances of the age in these stories, which are so real that readers may find them surreal, have a vivid aesthetic appeal, along with a slow narrative pace and precise details. The author has been critically recognized by being awarded The 39th Minumsa Writer of the Year Award, as well as much loved by Korean readers for her realistic imagination, strange and fascinating style, and the vigor of her stories. This collection has been listed as a Must-read for the Next Generation of Journalists on the Reality of Human Rights, which is published by Danbinews, the non-profit news media run by the Graduate School of Journalism at Semyung University

Born in Seoul in 1976, GU Byeong-mo long dreamt of becoming a published author and submitted her first manuscript as a high school freshman. She worked in publishing as an editor for many years, honing her writing skills before making her debut in 2008 with the YA novel Wizard Bakery. This first novel received the Changbi Young Adult Writer’s Award, with the judging panel praising its “winning combination of mystery, horror, and fantasy”.
