Love In Our Times
The name, CHOI Seung-Ja, is now an icon in the Korean literary establishment for those who have undergone the turbulent eighties as young adults. It is impossible to talk about poetry by Korean women poets without referring to CHOI Seung-Ja. That is because her poetry has risen above the symbolic order that is constructed by men. Dysphemism, masochism, self-contempt and the relentless use of crude language that is found in her poems are not simply a sign of liberation but trumpeting a beginning of a new kind of poetry. Her poem starts off with a shocking message of “That I am alive — it is merely an eternal rumor.” It is a heartrending declaration of a woman who rejects all romantic fantasies, and has to endure the sterility of life, and the risk of deadly love with every fiber of her being.
CHOI Seung-Ja
Born in 1952, in Yeongi, Chungcheongnam-do. She went to Sudo Girls High School and majored in German Literature at Korea University. She made her debut as a poet when she published four poems including “Love In Our Times” in the fall edition of the quarterly, Literature and Intellect, in 1979. Her anthologies of poems are Love in Our Times, Merry Diary, House of Memory and My Green Grave
