세상을 바라보는 현자의 시선!

창작 활동과 대학에서의 연구를 묵묵히 병행해온 작가 송하춘의 다섯 번째 단편집 『스핑크스도 모른다』. 2000년 이후 발표한 10편을 엮은 것으로, 작가가 정년퇴임 기념 자선 단편집에도 포함시키지 않고 아껴둔 작품들이다. 시베리아, 울릉도, 교토와 후쿠오카, 이집트, 실크로드와 돈황, 인도와 히말라야 등 다채로운 장소로 안내하며 여행에 근거한 서사를 펼치고 있다. 단순히 여행에서 보고 들은 것을 소개하는 데 그치지 않고, 널리 알려진 시를 차용하여 작가를 그 장소들로 이끈 문학 텍스트에 대한 매혹을 보여준다. 또한 여행지에서 이루어지는 세상에 대한 관찰과 자신의 내면에 대한 성찰의 시선을 엿볼 수 있다. 노년층 화자의 시선으로 전달하는 이야기들이 담담한 듯 보이지만, 일상과 환상을 넘나드는 요소들로 재미를 더하고 있다.

Song Ha-choon송하춘

Song Ha-choon is a writer. He made his literary debut with a short story that won the Chosun Ilbo New Writer’s Contest in 1972. He is the author of the short story collections The Fall That Just Passed By, The Daughters of Habaek, and The Sphinx Does Not Know Either, and the novels Against the Wind and Climbing the Pacific.
