백수혜 작가는 공덕동의 조그마한 마당이 있는 집으로 이사 온 후 어느 날 우연찮게 재개발 단지를 마주친다. 놀랍게도 이주민이 길가에 버리고 간 수많은 물건의 대다수는 식물이었다. 화분만 챙겨 갔는지 화분 모양대로 흙과 함께 굳어진 식물이 있는가 하면, 잡동사니가 가득 담긴 상자에 끼어 있는 식물, 음식물 쓰레기 틈에 방치된 식물, 심지어 멀쩡한 식물이 화분 통째로 우두커니 폐허를 지키고 있었다.
