Description 작품 소개
Songs of Medusa, written by Kim Ok, is the first collection of poetry published in Korea and a collection of Kim Ok's first poems. The works in this collection are early poems written by Kim Ok from 1915 to 1922.
As the poet mentions in the introduction, the works mainly express the wanderings and sadness of youth, the sorrow of parting and disappointment in love. These feelings were influenced by French symbolism.
This collection was a concrete attempt to create modern poetry based on the typical rhythm of the Korean language and the modern literary language of Korea. The collection vividly reflects how Western modern poetry, especially French poetry of the 19th-20th centuries, spread to Korea via Japan and became the code for creating modern Korean poetry.
*
Kim Ok played an important role in the history of Korean literature as a poet who created Korean poetic words, form, and expressions of feelings in modern poetry. He also spread poetry among the people by turning his poems into songs.
His contribution as a poet reflects the complex process of the development of Korean literature in the modern era—showing how Western modern poetry spread to Korea via Japan and was transformed into uniquely Korean poetry.
