Description 작품 소개
Earthlings tells the story of Lee Jong-dae, the mastermind behind the carbine robbery that occurred in 1974, and his half-brother, Lee Jong-se. The two spent their childhood in the chaotic world immediately following the Korean War.
To escape poverty, the older brother repeatedly resorts to extortion and gradually becomes involved in crime. He meets a woman working as a prostitute for the U.S. military and desires to start a family with her. However, he gets into a fight with an American soldier and accidentally kills him. After prison, escape, and working in a mine, he and fellow prisoner Moon Do-seok plot robberies that eventually lead to bank robbery and murder.
Meanwhile, Jong-se joins a traveling circus troupe and witnesses the horrors of the Vietnam War, leaving him with fatal psychological wounds.
*
This work is modeled on a real event from 1974 that plunged Korean society into shock and turmoil. Author Choi In-oh spent a long time researching this incident, vividly depicting the dark underbelly of post-Korean War Korean society through the lives of the two protagonists.
The work persistently questions whether society bears responsibility for turning people into monsters, and whether there is any path to salvation. "Earthlings" was also adapted into films and dramas.
