Description 작품 소개
During Japan's imperialist occupation, the brutal forced labor on Hashima Island was notorious even within Japan. Han Su-shan's novel Battleship Island depicts Korean civilians forcibly conscripted into labor at Hashima's coal mines, later becoming atomic bomb survivors, and ultimately perishing in a foreign land.
Two years after her marriage, Seo-yeong finally conceived the child she longed for, only to learn her husband Ji-sang had volunteered for forced labor in place of his elder brother. Coal mining began at 6 a.m. and lasted 15 grueling hours. Accidents were constant in the brutal conditions, claiming the lives of over half the laborers before they could leave the island.
Ji-sang plotted escapes with various companions, eventually swimming across the sea and drifting unconscious along the Nagasaki coastline, where an elderly fishing couple discovered him and saved his life.
