Description 작품 소개

The year 1910 marks a definitive fracture in Korean history—the year the nation lost its sovereignty. For Ji Bong-im, born into a destitute farming family in this fateful year, her entry into the world was a direct path into misfortune, shaped by both colonial tragedy and the rigid patriarchal ideology at the time.Through Bong-im’s biography, author Chang Eunah explores how a human being can transform such systemic despair into a profound sense of fulfillment.

Bong-im’s hardships begin with the loss of her mother at age nine, followed by her being sold as a min-myeoneuri (child-bride) at fourteen. Her marriage offers no respite; her husband, a man of the ”new age” who studied in Japan, regards her as a relic of a bygone era. Even as he remains devoted to another woman, Bong-im chooses to love him with an expansive, selfless sincerity—embracing even the shadow of his hidden lover as a part of the man she cherishes. This "radical acceptance" serves as the cornerstone of her character.

As the narrative traverses the Japanese occupation, the chaos of liberation, and the harrowing losses of the Korean War, Bong-im remains an anchor in the storm. She extends her dignity and love even to her husband’s mistress and their illegitimate child, steadfast in her belief that every human being is inherently worthy of respect.

Through The Song of Windflower, Chang Eunah challenges the notion that history is solely the domain of powerful leaders or men. The author posits that the true force sustaining a nation through its darkest eras is the "grassroots" spirit—specifically the tenacious, life-giving power of women. Like a wildflower that pierces through frozen, snow-covered earth to bloom in the spring, Bong-im’s life testifies that if one holds fast to a single inner truth, any life is worth living, and any hardship can be endured.
