1939 Gyeongseong, colonial-era Seoul. A film shoot is underway at Myeongseong Apartment, where a twelve-year-old housemaid Ip-bun lives and works for her lady. When a resident participating in the film production is found dead, everyone in the apartment becomes a suspect. As the police investigation unfolds, the desires and secrets each resident has concealed—hidden identities, long-buried truths—begin to surface.

Told through the eyes of Ip-bun, the novel captures the customs and atmosphere of life in Gyeongseong, along with the anxiety of the era.
