Description 작품 소개

A guide on writing effective emails and a love letter

to genuine and respectful communication

Part instruction manual and part memoir, The Art of Writing Life-Changing Emails is an ode to one of the world’s most prominent mediums of communication, emails. In a world that relies heavily – and is perhaps addicted to – instant messaging, YSRA points out that emails have maintained their relevance and are an indispensable tool for corporate workers, freelancers, and artists like herself. It is over emails that professional networks are built, ideas are exchanged, and projects come into fruition. But essentially an electronic letter, emails can also be a means of conveying our deepest and most intimate thoughts and emotions.

The book is partly instructional and teaches readers how to format and write effective work emails. Although YSRA writes from the perspectives of a publisher and an author, her lessons are applicable to professionals of all industries. The topics that YSRA has chosen are universal and highly relatable. She covers the basics of writing a concise self-introduction and the importance of getting a recipient’s name right – seemingly easy tasks but people tend to fumble due to urgency or lack of care. There are also chapters dedicated to the more practical aspects of professional work – remunerations, rejections, requests for changes, and apologies, for instance. Where relevant, the author selects a real email to break down, line by line. In chapter four, a section about her attempt to connect with a high-profile TV writer, she goes through the email that she’d written as an eighteen-year-old and humorously critiques each paragraph, pointing out what she would delete, add, or change. Aside from instruction, however, the author delves into how our emails can change the way we see and treat ourselves and others. Including the budget or remuneration in a commission email, for instance, doesn’t only help the artist decide whether to accept the project, but also shows how much the client values a person’s labour and talent. In sum, well-written emails open us up to more career- and life-changing opportunities and reminds us to treat others with kindness and respect.

Emails That Have Changed Her Life

The biggest merit of emails is that ‘it buys the recipient time’. Although much more instantaneous than snail mail, it doesn’t pressure the recipient to respond immediately, and its formal nature encourages deliberation, coherence, and eloquence. YSRA’s prowess as a memoir writer shines through in chapters where she recounts personal anecdotes involving emails that have changed her life. She writes about her closest male friend, Sohn, who despite his timid demeanour, had plucked up the courage to write her a heartfelt letter a month after her wedding. In lyrical prose, Sohn reflects on YSRA’s wedding and reveals how inspired he felt by the attendees’ talents, warmth, and strength, and how YSRA’s wedding and her friendship had restored his faith in humanity. There is also a sweet chapter on how her U.S. educated husband had written her poetic emails during their early days of courtship, and how his attention to words has inspired her to believe in poetry. Emails go beyond corporate communication; they can be cogent mediums of emotional connection so long as they are written from the heart.

At the core of this book is a gentle nudge to be mindful of how we are communicating, no matter the medium or purpose. Thankfully, the art of email writing is a learned skill. The more we practice, the better we get. And the more conscious we are of crafting good emails, the more respect and kindness we extend to our recipients. The world runs on communication, and given the number of emails we send out in our lifetime, they have the power to mold relationships, influence decisions, and change lives.
