This volume pairs the short novel Let’s Take the Long Way with a selection of the author’s personal diary entries. After reading the story, readers are invited to step into the writer’s private world, retracing the days spent writing through intimate notes, and even encountering photographs of the author’s desk.

The book is both a work of fiction and a portrait of the person behind it. The novel itself reflects on the ever-shifting nature of the self — seemingly constant, yet subtly transformed by the passing of time. Life, too, rarely follows a straight path; we often find ourselves taking winding detours or looking back on roads already travelled. With delicate yet lively prose, the author sketches these moments of hesitation, return and rediscovery, offering comfort and resonance to the 'ordinary selves' of the world.

The narrator recalls fragments of the past: idly scraping salt from a shaker in the corner of her mother’s restaurant as a child, or peeling a sackful of apples simply for the fun of it. That child has grown into an adult who no longer 'goes off to work', wondering if the self she once believed in might be disappearing moment by moment. Yet, in another sense, she remains unchanged, still drawn to seemingly 'useless' pursuits like wandering in search of wild berries.

Through such vignettes, Let’s Take the Long Way captures the detours and consistencies that shape our lives, rendering them with a rhythm that is both thoughtful and light-hearted.

Author Bio 작가 소개

Song Ji Hyun debuted with the story “A Study on Punk-Rock Style Straw Design” which won the 2013 Dong-a Ilbo New Writer’s Contest. She has authored the short-story collection Like an Epilogue, So to Speak and the essay collection East Sea Life. She received the 2021 Hyundae Munhak Literary Award for the story “The Things We Eat in Summer,” which is carried here in full.
