Language crosses borders, but feelings always arrive with a distinct face. The books Korean readers chose in the final quarter of 2025 are no different: quiet, yet unmistakably alive to the emotions of the moment.

 

At KLWAVE, we publish quarterly bestseller lists to bring international readers closer to contemporary Korean literature. The Q4 2025 list is a record of what readers reached for, and what they leaned on, as reflected in sales across major Korean booksellers. Follow the list, and the emotional texture of the year’s final season comes into focus.

 

Taking the top spot this quarter is Seong Haena’s Honmono. With precise yet cutting prose, this short story collection confronts the underside of everyday life. Its place at the top reaffirms the trust Korean readers place in her work. What lingers is the force with which it pursues hard questions to the end, refusing to let go.

 

Second place goes to Gu Byeong-mo’s Incised Wound, and third to Hwang Sok-yong’s Grandma. Two works from different generations and sensibilities sit side by side at the top. Together, they illuminate the full range of Korean literature, where tradition and the present, individual narrative and collective memory, converge on a single list.

 

Yang Gui-ja’s Contradiction (4th) and Kim Ae-ran’s I Said “Annyeong” (6th) offer two distinct ways of looking at life. One returns to long-standing questions; the other draws out the truth of living from the moment of farewell. That both continue to be chosen by readers, season after season, is itself a testament to their enduring relevance.

 

Han Roro’s The Grapefruit Apricot Club (5th) expands the readership with a fresh narrative sensibility, while Lee Young-do’s The Last Words of Sir Earthtam (10th) demonstrates the loyal following that genre fiction commands. Cheon Seonran’s Where No One Comes (11th) further refelcts the distinct voice and devoted readership that Korean SF has earned.

 

Essays and personal prose also run as a clear current through the list. An Adult’s Happiness is Quiet (7th), On Kindness (8th), The Dignity of an Adult (13th), Kind People Triumph (16th), and Cherish Yourself As You Live (17th) all explore adulthood, quietly asking how one ought to move through life. Less noise, more thought. Less rushing ahead, more staying beside. This quarter, readers found their bearings in sentences pointing in that direction.

 

I’ll Be Happy, Even If It Seems Like Too Much (12th) and Your Time Will Come (15th) show how the language of consolation mirrors today’s atmosphere—not quick answers, but sentences built to endure time.

 

Han Kang’s Human Acts (9th) and Yang Gui-ja’s I Desire What Is Forbidden to Me (18th) continue to be read for their unflinching gaze at historical wounds. The events we must remember, and the questions that refuse to fade, recur across generations. Literature does not consume suffering. It simply stays with it.

 

Jung Dae-gun’s The Torrent (14th), Ra Taejoo’s I Look at You as I Do a Flower (19th), and The Vegetarian (20th) round out a list that mixes new releases with enduring favorites—proof that Korean literature today is anything but one-dimensional. This is the result of choosing direction over speed, resonance over sensation.

 

As the year draws to a close, there is every reason to open a book. Literature does not lead the way. It waits. For us to come back to it. The bestsellers of Q4 2025 are, in that sense, sentences of quiet conviction, offered from within that waiting.

이번 분기 1위는 성해나의 『혼모노』다. 단정하면서도 날카로운 문장으로 현실의 이면을 직시하는 이 소설집은, 가장 높은 자리에서 한국 독자들의 신뢰를 다시 한번 증명했다. 가볍지 않은 질문을 끝까지 밀어붙이는 힘이 오래 남는다.
