An Age That Needs Questions More Than Answers: Q2 2026 Best Sellers scrap download

“Beyond the answers AI gives us, what questions will we continue to ask?”
This was the question the 2026 Seoul International Book Fair posed through its theme, Homo Duduri. Duduri is an old Korean word for a blacksmith and is also linked to the origins of the dokkaebi, the Korean goblin in folklore. Like a blacksmith hammering heated iron into new forms, Homo Duduri imagines a person who refuses the comfort of machine-generated answers and instead chooses to keep questioning, honing, and forging questions of their own.
Answers have never been easier to come by. Search engines finish our thoughts before we’ve finished typing, and AI produces conclusions with remarkable confidence. Yet certain questions remain stubbornly unresolved. Why does love so often go awry? How do emotional wounds heal? Why does history keep returning in the guise of the present? Perhaps literature is most needed alongside questions that refuse to be closed.
In that light, the bestselling Korean books of the second quarter of 2026 provide a glimpse into the stories readers chose to live with at a moment when asking questions matter more than finding answers. Some contained sentences that offered consolation. Others reopened questions long thought settled, and still others invited readers into lives and sensibilities far removed from their own.
Kim Ae-ran’s They Said “Annyeong” claimed the top spot. Marked by Kim’s distinctly sharp eye for the fine fractures that run beneath ordinary life, the short story collection has remained a fixture on bestseller lists since it was published last year. Another one of her acclaimed collections Summer Outside also made the list at No. 9.
In the second place is Yang Gui-ja’s Contradictions, considered the most remarkable “reverse-run” success in modern Korean literature. First published in 1998, the novel has found an enthusiastic new readership 28 years later, demonstrating the power of its prose that do not fade with time. Its revival has also renewed interest in I Desire What Is Forbidden to Me, which boldly confronts women’s oppression. The book takes eleventh place, underscoring the enduring appeal of her literature across generations.
Singer-songwriter Han Roro’s debut novel The Grapefruit Apricot Club lands at third place. Set within the same fictional world as the musician’s album of the same title, the novel follows a group of teenagers who, for different reasons, have had to swallow the words “I want to live,” until they begin supporting each other. It has drawn attention as an experimental work that moves between literature and music.
Haena Sung’s Honmono, which delves into the boundary between what is real and what is fake, has remained on the list at fourth place, confirming its continued popularity, while Jung Dae-gun’s The Torrent reached sixth place, telling the story of two people sharing similar emotional wounds gradually healing through one another.
Works by Han Kang once again appeared prominently on this quarter’s bestseller list. Human Acts, which revisits the Gwangju Uprising of May 1980, ranked fifth, while We Do Not Part, a nuanced portrayal of the tragedy of the Jeju April 3 Incident, came in at thirteenth place. In addition, her internationally acclaimed novel The Vegetarian ranked twentieth, reaffirming the sustained interest in and love for Han Kang’s literature.
Jo Hyeonseon’s My Perfect Funeral reached seventh place. Set around a small convenience store located across from a hospital funeral hall, this heartwarming novel follows mysterious nighttime visitors and the final requests they leave behind to explore emotions left unspoken in life. Meanwhile, Gu Byeong-mo’s Incised Wound, which reflects on what it means to read through the story of a woman who reads others’ minds through their wounds, ranked eighth on the list.
Although fiction dominated this quarter’s list, two poetry collections by Na Taejoo stand as reminders of Korean readers’ love for poetry. Cherish Yourself as You Live comes in at tenth place, while I See You Like I See a Flower takes seventeenth place, demonstrating the enduring power of poems whose few short verses can remain with readers for a long time.
Park Min-gyu’s Pavane for a Dead Princess ranked twelfth, while Kim Jin-myung’s Sejong’s Country Vol. 1, which retraces the legacy of one of the greatest kings in Korean history, placed fourteenth, showcasing the broad spectrum of the diversity of contemporary Korean fiction.
The 17th Young Writers’ Award Anthology claims the fifteenth place, offering an early look at the next generation of writers who will shape the future of Korean literature. Bringing together stories by Kim Chae-Won, Gil Ran, Nam Ui-hyeon, Seo Jang-won, Wi Soo Jung, Lee Misang, and Ham Yoon-I, this anthology contains seven voices of emerging writers, each shining along their own path.
Compelling stories across a range of genres also appear on the list. Jung Haeyeon’s mystery novel The Place of Flamingo reached sixteenth place, while Choi Jin-young’s The Proof of Ku, a novel about loss and absence, came in at eighteenth place. You-Jeong Jeong’s intense psychological thriller Shoot Me in the Heart rounds out the list at nineteenth, each capturing readers with its own distinctive storytelling.
