Born in Seoul in 1942, she graduated from the Korean Language Education Department at Seoul National University and worked as a Korean language teacher. After immigrating to Brazil, she served as the principal of the Korean School in São Paulo for eight years, and before returning to Korea, she taught Korean literature at an international school.

홍영녀(1916~2011)는 한국의 수필가다. 70세가 다 되어 한글을 배우고 글을 쓰기 시작했다. 이후 꾸준히 써온 글을 자녀들이 엮어 1995년 수필집 《가슴이 하고 싶었던 이야기》를 펴냈다. 2005년 11월 KBS `인간극장` `그 가을의 뜨락` 편 주인공으로 등장하여 널리 알려졌다.

She wrote a thesis on the nutritional deficiencies of North Korean residents who grew up during the "Arduous March," and after graduating with a master's degree, she moved to Kaesong in North Korea to work in food supply and management at the Kaesong Industrial Complex. Following the sudden closure of the complex, she broadened her perspective on North Korea through her work with North Korean defectors and continues to engage in peace and unification lectures and support activities.
