He was born in Seoul and graduated from the Department of Applied Arts at Seoul National University, where he also completed graduate studies. Afterward, he earned a master's degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in the United States and a Ph.D. from the graduate school of New York University. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Design at Seoul National University.
