Description
Since Suhrkamp’s foundation in 1950, it is our aim and principle as a publishing house not to publish books but authors. In this sense we aim to accompany our authors and books over the years, help them grow, and find their public. The pillars of Suhrkamp's publishing program are literature, both German-language and international, non-fiction, and science, with its focus on philosophy and the social sciences.
Suhrkamp publishes around 300 books per year, approximately 20% of them are translations. It is a matter of particular importance to Suhrkamp’s editors to entertain good relationships with international publishing houses, agencies, and cultural institutions. Suhrkamp’s integrated marketing program is based upon the fluid teamwork of our sales, advertising, publicity, and editorial departments. All our activity is directed to the same purpose, which is not so much to create a high demand in the short term, but rather to achieve consistent long-term successes.
The company was established by Peter Suhrkamp, who led the equally renowned S. Fischer Verlag since 1936. Suhrkamp was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944, but survived concentration camp imprisonment. He left the Fischer publishing house, establishing his own in 1950. A majority of the writers associated with Fischer followed him. Among the first authors he published were Hermann Hesse, Rudolf Alexander Schröder, Hermann Kasack, T. S. Eliot, George Bernard Shaw and Bertolt Brecht.
Suhrkamp Verlag has around 130 employees. Until January 2010, the company’s headquarters were situated in Frankfurt am Main, after that, they moved to Berlin.
Among the best-selling works you will find a variety of titles from »Minima Moralia« by Theodor W. Adorno to »Meine geniale Freundin« by Elena Ferrante.
