About Event

Launched in 2006, the Seoul International Writers’ Festival (SIWF) is a global literary festival aimed at expanding opportunities to enjoy literature and providing a platform for international exchange in Seoul. Between 2006 and 2021, a total of 268 writers from 58 countries were invited to take part. By focusing on the multilateral impact created by writers and readers as well as life and literature, the SIWF aspires to develop into a festival of international renown and scale.

Awakening

We’ve finally come to realize that we knew nothing at all. What we knew before— light dinners, masks, warm embraces, ventilators, applause and cheers, families and friends, infected people and passers-by…
We now think about the things that have changed completely. We recognize the world in 2021, altered yet fixed, and the world of tomorrow, which will be different yet constant.
We’ve given rise to crises and misery. It falls on our shoulders overcome them.
Here, literature sets its foot down and awakens by asking itself where it should start and finish, and whose hands it should hold.
We awaken.
Awakening—we’ll start anew from there.

Awakening

우리는 아무것도 몰랐다는 것을, 이제야 알게 되었습니다. 지금까지 우리가 알고 있던 것, 그러니까 가벼운 저녁 식사, 마스크, 뜨거운 포옹, 산소호흡기 박수와 함성, 기침과 발열, 가족과 친구, 감염자와 행인……
지금에 와서야 완전히 바뀌어 버린 것들을 생각합니다. 그리고 깨닫습니다. 달라진 채 고정된 2021년의 세계를, 고정된 채 달라질 앞으로의 세상을.
위기와 참혹은 우리에게서 비롯되었으며 그것의 극복 또한 우리의 의무일 것입니다.
이곳에 발 딛고 서서 문학은 이제 무엇을 해야 할지 어디서 끝나고 어디에서 시작할지 그곳에서 누구의 손을 잡을지 자문하고 각성하는 시간을 갖습니다.
우리는 자각합니다.
자각-거기에서부터 다시 시작할 것입니다.
