As the New Year arrives once again, more people are visiting bookstores. Among many New Year resolutions, “reading” remains one of the most common and achievable. For readers unsure of which book to pick up, we present our list of twenty books selected as this year’s first-quarter bestsellers.

Turning the first page of a new book is like reflecting on the direction of our lives. The moment we delve into the depths of our hearts through someone else’s story, we find a definite reason to pause amid our busy daily lives. When we encounter “trivial yet significant” moments we once overlooked, pushed aside by the small and large events in our lives, we may finally grasp the clues to life we missed. We hope these stories, each with their own nuances and tones, will serve as a helpful guide for those preparing for another beginning, wherever they maybe in life.

Singer-song writer Han Roro’s first short story The Grapefruit Apricot Club presents the love and solidarity of those who stay close while carrying their own shadows. Sharing the same universe as the EP of the same name, this story has topped the charts, drawing attention for its innovative blend of music and literature. The story centers around four children, each with their own pain, offering comfort to adult readers through the unveiling of childhood wounds.

Just as a brief, friendly greeting, “annyeong,” can linger and become a reason to keep living, Kim Ae-Ran’s short story collection I said “Annyeong” has climbed the charts, holding steady in second place. Yang Gui-ja’s novel Contradiction and Seong Haena’s short story collection Honmono rank third and fourth respectively, a testament to the continued strength of fiction in the new year. Yang Gui-ja’s I Desire What is Forbidden to Me also remains in the top twenty, showing its ongoing popularity.

Meanwhile, Park Min-gyu’s Pavane for a Dead Princess (hardcover special edition), adapted into the Netflix film Pavane this February, reached fifth place on the chart. A steady seller since its serialization online in 2008, its revised edition further extends the story’s timeline to encompass the protagonists’ future lives. Hwang Sok-yong’s latest work Grandma takes sixth place. Hwang, who was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, completed the novel with the help of Hwang Yun’s documentary Sura: A Love Song. The work illustrates how literature, long regarded as a source of genre imagination, opens up and realizes infinite possibilities through its dialogue with film.

The winner of Master Chef Korea 2 and Culinary Class Wars 2, Choi Kang-rok, who has also appeared in Culinary Class Wars 1 and Please Take Care of My Refrigerator, has released an autobiographical essay. Ranked seventh, What It Means to Cook offers an honest reflection on work and life while prompting readers to quietly confront the questions they had buried in the gaps of their lives. Other essays, such as An Adult’s Happiness Is Quiet, An Illustrated Guide to Japanese Ad Copy, and I’ll Be Happy, Even If It Seems Like Too Much, also made the top twenty.

Jo Hyeonseon’s imagination and storytelling shine in her fantasy novel MyPerfect Funeral, which takes tenth place. Set at night in a hospital where life and death intersect, the story follows a protagonist working at a convenience store and offers readers unexpected joy and emotional resonance. On the other hand, Jung Dae-gun’s The Torrent, Gu Byeong-mo’s Incised Wound, and Han Kang’s Human Acts remain on the charts since last year, with the unwavering support of their readers. The Yi Sang Literary Awards Anthology, Snow and Stone, has entered the charts, proving its popularity since its release. It embodies the critical perspectives and sharp insights of the next generation of writers. Alongside the grand prize winner, Wi Soo Jung, the nominated works of Kim Hye-jin, Seong Hyeryeong, Lee Min-jin, Jeong Yihyeon, and Ham Yoon-I offer a comprehensive view of both the present and future of Korean literature.

Park Wansuh’s Grandma Judy, Na Taejoo’s Cherish Yourself As You Live, and Kim Jin-myung’s Sejong’s Country Vol.1 have also made it onto the bestseller list. Reader support is reflected in the return of long-standing bestselling authors in Korean literature and their sustained ranking presence, proving their lasting influence. Jeong You Jeong’s Shoot My Heart has also returned, seventeen years after its first edition in 2009, with a new cover, drawing many readers’ attention through its gripping narrative and refined style.

This quarter’s selection clearly illustrates the layered nature of contemporary Korean literature, featuring works that span genres and generations: new writers introducing unprecedented stylistic and structural approaches, while established writers have built trust through long developed narratives. We find new possibilities in literature as it continues to reflect the most intimate emotions and questions of human life.
