Overview
This is the fourth novel of the author Gang Han, who has relentlessly investigated the fundamental nature of human desire and the truth of life hidden in the humdrum lives of ordinary human beings. He uses a low-tone but a very powerful prose in lyrical style to accomplish this. The author received the Dongin Literature Award for this work. This is a story of people who, surrounding the death of a promising young woman painter, stage a desperate battle against each other in order to prove what each one adheres to believe, and the emotional scars they inflict on each other during the process. The author Genre Literature questions how we, standing on the jagged edge of life that flickers and despairs each and every moment, should live our lives, and whether by living out our lives alone could enable us to acquire true wisdom. The brief plot is as follows. The two friends, Junghee Lee and Injoo Seo, the soul mate friends through junior high and high schools, were leading tumultous lives. On one winter, however, Injoo was found dead in the middle of a heavy snow storm in Mishiryeong Hill. Junghee tries to find witnesses who could help prove that Injoo's death was not a suicide. She investigates her mysterious death using the old photo, and the ciphered note on it back, accidentally found in her uncle's art studio where his pictures and belongings were left behind. During this process, Junghee comes in conflict with Seokwon Kang, an art critic who presumes Injoo's death was a suicide and tries to mythologize the death of a talented young woman painter, and eventually discovers the truth. What she discovers, however, are not just the truth of her friend's death. She experiences not only the boundary between life and death but also the problems of the origin of life, understanding and love of others, exclusive possession of memory and its reconstruction, the truth about madness and dark desire within us, passionate will to life and the profoundly sincere attitude toward nature and art. The literary critic Gyesook Kang once wrote the following. If the experience of the past is the root of our present existence, the author Gang Han tells us how its darkness could destroy our present life. However, the possibility of light, wavering but not extinguished, lights the will to life and breathe the breadth of life into the bottom of its root. As you close the last chapter of the book, the figure of a body that emerges through the flame of fire leaves the reader with a long-lasting and powerful emotional after-shock that reverberates over manifestation of profound human suffering.
