Kim Ki-young, a North Korean spy operating in South Korea since 1984, has lived a simple life after his superior went missing in 1995. One morning in 2005, he unexpectedly receives an order to return to Pyongyang immediately via coded email: "Clean up everything, return home immediately."

He has only one day, and if he does not return, it would mean he has no way to live. But he has his family, friends, and work in South Korea—a wife, a smart daughter, and a small film import company. How will he decide when faced with the moment of having to abandon everything?

This novel illustrates a day unlike any other for the family members, exploring themes of imperialism, division, and successive secrets. All three family members are, in a way, disguising themselves.

Kim Young-ha김영하

Kim Young-ha (b.1968) debuted in the quarterly magazine Review in 1995 with the short story “Reflections in the Mirror.” His short story collections include What Happened to the Guy Stuck in the Elevator? and He’s Back, None the Wiser. His novels are I Have the Right to Destroy Myself, Why Arang, Black Flower, Your Republic Is Calling You, Quiz Show, I Hear Your Voice, and How a Murderer Remembers. He is an op-ed writer for The New York Times and has won the Hyundae Literary Award, the Dong-in Literary Award, and the Yi Sang Literary Award.
