It delicately depicts a robot in the form of a 17-year-old boy who finds new life at the laundry store learning little by little about the complicated life of human beings.

Myeong-jeong is a widowed old man who runs a laundry store by himself in a small and quiet neighborhood. One day, he receives the devastating news that his son has died abroad. Sometime after, Myeong-jeong receives a package, which his son sent before his death, and finds a robot in the form of a 17-year old boy. The encounter of an old man who just lost his whole family and a robot who has no understanding of the world begins. He names the robot ‘Eun-gyeol’ after the name he saved for his second grandchild.
After nine years, Myeong-jeong slowly realizes that he doesn’t have that much time left and need to organize his life, and Eun-gyeol is slowly learning emotions despite his emotionless looks. Although Eun-gyeol is capable of highly complicated calculations, he cannot figure out the answers from the complex human life. A SPOONFUL OF TIME depicts the complex life of various people through the perspectives of an old man Myeong-jeong and a robot Eun-gyeol.

Like the saying Myeong-jeong told Eun-gyeol one day, “the age of the universe is over 13.7 billion years and the Earth is only 4.5 billion years old, our life is short like that blue detergent dissolving into the water”, it is heartwarming to see how the two very different stages of life resonate to find the valuable meanings of existence.

Gu Byeong-mo구병모

Gu Byeong-mo is known as an author that moves freely between the genre and techniques of fantasy and the style of traditional realism. Throughout her career, she has either depicted the fantasies of daily life or intermixed fantasy with daily life. Her light-hearted fantasy stories, in which magicians appear, people transform, and time runs backwards, also carry the shocking weight of issues like incest, child abuse, and filicide.
