 A collection of essays by the sculptor and artist, Ahn Kyuchul,  and his down-to-earth contemplations on objects and phenomena, as well as his life 

The book consists of four sections; “The Hour of Plants” is about his thoughts on objects; “Twenty Words” shares his rumination about words and language; “Blessing to the Artists” is about his search for the method of expression in art and writing; and in “The House with a Yard” his insight into life based on his life experiences. In this book, the author’s newly discovered world through his contemplation during the unexpected free time he gained will resonate deeply with the readers. 

While his previous book Nine Goldfish and Faraway Pond was his reflections on art and life of an artist, The Rear View of Objects are stories of a present-day ordinary person. “The Rear View” from the title holds a dual meaning of a writer who has reached middle age, looking back on his life as well as looking more closely at the other neglected side. As he states in the preface, he tried to “to commune with the plants, insects, and trees that we usually pass by and notice the other side of things we fail to see,” thereby unveiling a different world that he shares with a warm gaze. 

In “Inside and Outside,” he observes how “assiduously disassembling a device we are left helpless with, a circuit board that is as complex as a secret code” and that how the same phenomena applies to all aspects of our lives. In “The Right-Angle Problem,” he recounts a predicament he faced because of a carpenter who did not do a precise job of adjusting the angle—lamenting about the lack of “professionalism” in one’s occupation while simultaneously revealing his desire to let go of his “small-minded” dogmatism for he no longer wants to waste his life with such hang-ups. 

He also confesses in “Mug Cup” how the life of an artist is lonely and difficult. It will be well worthwhile to reflect on how only humans cannot adapt to the law of nature. He further professes, “I just have to keep at what I am doing at each given moment of my life, knowing it will end in incompleteness—although I do not know when it will end I do know it will surely end,” in “The Woof and the Weft,” he discloses his ceaseless artist spirit coupled with the poignant and resolute will to devote his life to that which he loves to do. 

Author Bio 작가 소개

He is a South Korean artist. He was born in Seoul in 1955. After studying sculpture at the Seoul National University of Fine Arts, he worked as a journalist for seven years at Gyegan Art. He studied at the Stiftung Stuttgart and began his career with his first solo exhibition in 1992.
