Description 작품 소개
* “Faction” (A novel based on the 1982 killing spree by rogue policeman Woo Bum-kon)
To those who don’t like humor in times of mourning, the author seems to say: “Humor is sometimes the best way to mourn.” - Hankook Daily
“The author asks if the cruelest thing that day, especially for those who needed help, was the impassive system, namely the inert bureaucracy, the oppressive, authoritarian culture, and a peace-at-any-price principle.” - Newsis
Kim Kyung Uk’s novel The Dog is Still a Wolf is based on the actual “Officer Woo killing spree that took place in April 1982. In Gungji-myeon County, Uiryeong-gun District, during the night of April 22nd begins the tragic story of 56 people randomly shot to death by a policeman, named Hwang in the novel.
In the evening of that day, a twilit time when distinguishing a dog from a wolf is difficult, postman Giltae and telephone operators Yeonghi and Jeongsuk are the first to be sacrificed. Their deaths cut off communication with the outside world. The evening grows darker, and the tension occasioned by the uncertainty as to where Officer Hwang would next reveal himself dominates the situation.
This novel focuses on each individual killed by Hwang, rather than on Hwang himself, and their stories are told as episodes. Bak Man-gil, who had a special sense of space; Son Yeong-gi, a childish boy with dreams, who sees everything through the framework of martial arts, and Son Yeong-hi, a girl who dreams of a bright future while exchanging letters with a foreign pen-pal.
Approaching villagers with lies about “communist guerrillas” that had supposedly appeared, Hwang employs his sharpshooting skills to kill one victim after another, and his brutal killing spree continues until 56 people have perished.
The novel stands out through the writer’s success in mixing a unique hard-boiled style with humor, but his careful, warm feelings for those sacrificed can also be felt. The book is simply a masterpiece. Kim Kyung Uk’s unique approach, where mourning and humor stand together, might also be the most humane approach to craft such a tragic incident into a novel. Thirty years have already passed, but that day is not forgotten. Finding the causes and those who were responsible, therein lies the ethic of The Dog is Still a Wolf.
