For years this dream has haunted the protagonist Gyeong-ha, who, after a series of painful separations, has locked herself away in voluntary isolation. It will be an unexpected message from a friend that snatches her away from her lonely life and the images of that nightmare: when Inseon, stuck in a hospital bed, begs her to travel to Jeju Island to give a drink to her budgie who is in danger of dying, Gyeong-ha hurries to catch the first plane to go save him. In Jeju, however, she is greeted by a terrible snowstorm and then a path in the darkness where she gets lost, falls, and is injured. It is the beginning of a descent into hell, into the abyss of one of the most heinous massacres Korea has known: thirty thousand civilians killed, and many more imprisoned and tortured, between late 1948 and early 1949. A wound never healed that continues to haunt the two friends, just as it had haunted Inseon's mother, a direct victim of that crime. Three women, united by the invisible thread of memory, who resolutely refuse to forget, to say goodbye and sever the bond with those who are no longer there. With her writing at once lyrical and relentlessly precise, made up of “moments frozen in flight that sparkle like crystals,” Han Kang succeeds in recounting this dark page of history, not only Korean history, delivering to the reader a painful, lucid and poetic novel-where the border between dream and reality, between the visible and the invisible, blurs until it almost vanishes.
