Description 작품 소개

A woman named Goh Manee identifies with the world-renowned gymnast Nadia Comaneci, and meanders in the gap between fantasy and reality. This novel warmly depicts the desires, frustrations, wounds and memories of those who cannot keep up with the speed and algorithms of the world.

The redevelopment of “S” district, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Seoul, gets underway. That’s where Goh Manee’s family lives. Having previously run a fruit store, a vegetable store, a snack stall, and a kiosk, her father now sells tteokbokki and fritters. Her intellectually challenged mother often has difficulty understanding everyday things. The family’s biggest interest these days is how to ride out the wave of urban redevelopment and move into a new apartment. Their only child, a 36-year-old unmarried woman “Goh Manee,” has just been fired from the company where she worked for ten years.

As a little girl, Manee dreams of becoming a rhythmic gymnast. After watching gymnasts on TV during the Seoul ’88 Olympic Games, she becomes captivated by rhythmic gymnastics and begins imitating some movements with her friends in the neighborhood. One day, thanks to her supportive mother, she starts taking gymnastics classes. However, it turns out that the dance academy her mother
enrolls Manee in is an aerobics academy—and even after a year, Manee’s skills in gymnastics show no improvement. Around that time, Manee finds out about the legendary Olympic medalist Nadia Comaneci, and begins to push herself further. Despite opposition from her father, her mother transfers Manee to a private elementary school that has a gymnastics club. After joining the school’s gymnastics team, Manee is devastated by the gap between her skills and those of her teammates who have been learning gymnastics since they were little. Manee realizes that she will always play second fiddle to them, just paying expensive training and gym fees. The day she has her first period, she quits gymnastics. After that, she gets on with life aimlessly—until she turns 36.

Meanwhile, housing prices continue to skyrocket following the news of redevelopment. Then, one day, Manee’s family finds out that the redevelopment plan is about to be scrapped. Ironically, only then a man who introduces himself as an office worker comes around to view the house. Manee and her parents are at odds over whether to tell this seemingly good-natured man the truth or to deceive him so they can sell the house and move elsewhere. All their lives, they have stuck to the principle of honesty. Faced with the biggest dilemma of their lives, what choice will they make?
