Description 작품 소개

Constructed by 100 chapters, the novel alternates between a memoir of a murderer and an investigation of a detective. The murderer who killed a college student Min So-rim in Shinchon 22 years ago recounts the process of murder and attacks the system and ethics of our society by analyzing modern society based on experience. She asserts that Enlightenment is the basis of our current system, and that our society needs new set of ethics.

As if responding to the murderer’s argument, Detective Yeon Ji-hye starts to reinvestigate the cold case. The case took place in August 2000, and the victim Min So-rim, who was a college student, was found stabbed and killed in her apartment no.1305 of Lumiere Building, Shinchon. At the time of discovery, the air conditioner was running in her one room apartment and the body was covered up with a raincoat and blanket. The building’s elevator CCTV was only working on odd number floors, and though an image of a man going down from 13th floor on August 3rd around midnight was shot on camera, only the jawline was visible under the brim of a cap. An unidentifiable DNA was found from Min So-rim’s body, but there was no match in the database back then.

Looking through past records, Ji-hye finds out that something is missing from the investigation. There is a record of summoning a fellow college student who had a quarrel with So-rim, but no detailed records of his statement or investigation. Jung Cheol-hee, a veteran detective who is investigating the case with Ji-hye remembers that he once slapped the student during a past investigation. The boy’s name was Yi Gi-eon. Ji-hye and Cheol-hee meets Gi-eon who is now a CEO of an IT company and finds out that in 2000, Min So-rim and Gi-eon was together a member of an unofficial Dostoevsky book club.

Through Gi-eon, Ji-hye meets other members of the book club; a movie director Goo Hyeon-seung, a carpenter Joo Mid-deum, and Kim Sang-eun who works at an international organization. The three often meet up at Mid-deum’s workshop. Meanwhile, with the investigation proceeding, Mid-deum suddenly mentions something about So-rim’s activities before she was killed….
