Description 작품 소개
We Are (Not) A Joke is a collection of plays by the late playwright Lee Eun-yong, which includes five of the plays written in their lifetime. The title play, "We Are (Not) A Joke," premiered in 2020 by the theater group "Of Course, This is Theater," and received much acclaim from both critics and the public. That year, it was selected as one of the 'Top 3 Plays of the Year' by the Korean Critics Association, won four categories at the 57th Dong-A Theater Awards, and in 2021, it received the Baeksang Arts Award for 'Best Play,' being recognized for posing significant questions to a society rife with hatred and discrimination.
"We Are (Not) A Joke" is a full-length play composed of six stories: "Everyday Death," "Menstruation," "Yi In-sil," "Transformation or Metamorphosis," "Last Will or We Are (Not) A Joke," and "Then My Younger Sister Knocked on the Door." Each piece stands alone while collectively setting up a larger picture of transgender lives that are not othered. The other four plays also center around those who are marginalized or excluded, with their voices intertwining and amplifying the playwright’s own, creating a louder and more powerful expression.
This book will be the first and last collection of plays by Lee Eun-yong. Although they exited the stage of life too early, it is hoped, as fellow playwright Jang Young notes in his review, that their voice will long remain on the stage for those who wish to live as their true selves, "adjusting the course of someone's life little by little," enabling them to "live a life of continuous change, without the fear of death."
