A Captivating K-Fantasy Work Grounded in Traditional Korean Myths and Legends
“Looking back, I realize I haven’t lived the same life all these years. Every encounter I’ve had represented the start of a new life!”
Inspired by the legend of Dangun—Korea’s foundation myth—this book will transport readers into the captivating universe of the Yaho and Horang tribes who are at war with each other over a precious bead. Featuring a young girl who has been fifteen years old for five hundred years as the protagonist, this work of Korean fantasy will provide an immersive experience to readers of all ages. In addition, the book contains beautiful illustrations by Hyun A Cho, the author of the immensely popular and award-winning webtoon "Your Letter." Readers will be enthralled by the stunning artwork portraying the Yaho and Horang tribes, who are humans who have evolved from foxes and tigers. Is immortality a blessing or a curse? Readers will embark on a mesmerizing journey of self-discovery with the first Yaho, who has remained fifteen years old ever since acquiring a precious bead! Hwanung descends from the heavens to establish a new civilization and is approached by a bear, a tiger, and a fox. The bear and tiger ask Hwanung to turn them into humans, but the fox declines and instead agrees to help Dangun at Ungnyeo’s request, who gives her a precious bead to establish the Yaho tribe. Building upon elements from traditional Korean folk tales such as “The Fox Sister,” “The Grateful Magpie,” and “The Tiger Brother,” this captivating novel adds its own unique twist with the addition of a protagonist with a mysterious fate who has been fifteen years old for five hundred years straight. Gaeul, the protagonist, received a precious bead from the first Yaho called Ryeong at the age of fifteen, over five hundred years ago. This turned her into a servant and put a stop to her aging. As a result, she began questioning the meaning of life, saddened by the fact that she could not reveal her true identity to loved ones who she must part with time and time again. She felt lost and confused about her own identity, unable to find acceptance among either humans or other Yahos. As a result, she has built an invisible wall around herself, leading a lonely existence, and avoiding getting emotionally attached to others. Everyone with a heart, whether human or Yaho, is unable to turn a blind eye to their emotions. The bond between two loving souls can give rise to unexpected and extraordinary fates. Gaeul, who is a Yaho, was born from the love between a human and a Horang. Being neither fully human nor Yaho, Gaeul struggled to find meaning in her own existence, but gradually discovered her destiny and purpose through the precious relationships she formed with others throughout many lifetimes. As the Yaho and Horang tribes wage war over the first bead, Gaeul finds herself at a crossroads where she must make a difficult decision, and she makes a surprising choice that leads her on a path toward profound personal growth. Breaking out of her invisible emotional barriers, Gaeul emerges as a transformed individual. As they follow her on her incredible journey, readers will be made to reflect on the meaning of growth that they too will face in their own lives.
