1. Life
Kim Youngeun was born in 1985 in Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province. She graduated from Chung-Ang University with a degree in creative writing. Describing herself, she writes, “Since childhood, I couldn’t stick with anything because I lacked patience and perseverance, but I’ve always liked reading, writing, and imagining things. I believe it was thanks to that love that I was lucky enough to have a job I love doing.” She currently works as a television writer, mainly writing period dramas. She has also collaborated on film adaptations of novels and novelizations of films.
2. Writing
Kim Youngeun is a television writer who mainly writes genre fiction, particularly romance and period dramas. She also writes novelizations of films and television series. Her debut novel, 19 29 39, published in 2010, was conceived and co-written with two other popular television writers Jung Soohyun and Choi Suyeong. The novel follows three women, aged 19, 29, and 39, who discover that they are dating the same man. After establishing the premise, the three writers each took on one of the three women and wrote the novel over the course of a year, passing the manuscript from one writer to the next. Kim Youngeun wrote the nineteen-year-old character, and because she was 25 at the time, she had to conduct extensive research to describe the situations and emotions from the perspective of a teenager. She later collaborated with Jung Soohyun a second time to write the novel Hanyang daieori (한양 다이어리 The Hanyang Diaries). Written over five years, the novel follows three characters, Shin Cheongdam, Yi Taewon, and Eul Jiro, against the backdrop of a fictionalized Joseon-era setting. It was adapted into a webtoon series and serialized on the digital content platform RIDI from December 2020 to December 2022, and was also published as a web novel in 2021.
