Author Bio 작가 소개

The three things that Fkaf destroyed are none less than the basics of life. It is no easy task to assign meaning to a life devoid of corporal being, family, and abode. Anyone who lacks even one of these is immediately relegated to inferiority. A less than able-bodied person is handicapped. A person without a family must be a vagabond. A person without a place to live is homeless. The unloved Zamba transforms into a lowly insect. He then goes in search of love, hoping to overcome his trifold lack. His quest, of course, is an impossible one. The chances of someone without a body, family, and home finding love are lower than that of an ordinary person turning into a bug.
Why, then, did Fkaf create Gregory Zamba this way? Or perhaps the question should be, what happened to Gregory Zamba? Why did he become an insect in the first place?

Born in Seoul in 1975, Kang Byoung Yoong studied creative writing at Myongji University and Russian literature at Moscow State University. He now teaches Korean literature in the Department of Asian Studies in Slovenia’s Ljubljana University. Besides his career as a novelist, he has also worked in album producing, DVD production, publishing, teaching at hagwon, screenwriting, and writing for a sports paper. He has written about his experiences living abroad and raising a family in Slovenia in  the essay collections  Saranghaedo neomu saranghae (사랑해도 너무 사랑해 I Love You Too Much) and Anaereul daleun dosi (아내를 닮은 도시 A City Like My Wife).

2. Writing

Kang's approach to writing is fundamentally that of a prankster sending up authority. His writing is ode to the argument that experimenting with new form is more important than the content of the novel itself. Kang's writing is thus characterized by not just its unusual choice of subject matter, but the author's outrageous imagination bridging reality and fantasy as well as experiments in style and form. His early work, in particular, showcases his preoccupation with the fantastical. His 2002 story "Byeontae" (변태), for instance, imagines a world in which it is possible to transform into the toilet of one's loved one, while his first collection of short stories, Sangsangingan iyagi (상상인간 이야기Tales of Imaginary People), features a cast of fascinatingly incredible characters. After the publication of his first novel and collection of short stories in 2006, Kang returned in six years with a yet more experimental second novel, Yssiui geosee gwanhan japseureoun girokji (Y씨의 거세에 관한 잡스러운 기록지Assorted Records on the Castration of Mr. Y). The story of Y, born without a nose, emerges slowly through sixty fictional articles and nine editorials. Kang's formal experimentation continues in Yeoreobun, igeo da geojinmarin geo asijyo? (여러분, 이거 다 거짓말인 거 아시죠? You Know All This Is a Pack of Lies, Right?), his collection of short stories inspired by the presidency of Lee Myung-bak. Kang's love of parody is apparent in such stories as "Gwitturami boilleoga onda" (귀뚜라미 보일러가 온다 Kiturami Boiler is Coming), a take on friend and fellow novelist Paik Gahuim's "Gwitturamiga onda" (귀뚜라미가 온다 Cricket is Coming), or "Binggeulbinggeul dolgo-alpongseu dodereul wihan ‘utpeun’ omaju" (빙글빙글 돌고-알퐁스 도데를 위한 웃픈’ 오마주 Going Round and Round: An Homage to Alphonse Daudet), an homage to Alphonse Daudet's "The Stars." The standout of the collection is no doubt  "Urakkai" (우라까이 Lifted), a story composed entirely of sentences and words copy-pasted from 252 news articles published during the term of former president Lee Myung-bak, from Feb 25, 2008, to Feb 225, 2013.
