No Seung-il was born in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi Province, in 1943. He graduated from Kyung Hee University's Korean literature department. Employed as a journalist by the Korea Baduk Association in 1969, he wrote a baduk column for ten years. He has also published instructional manuals on the game. Famed for his dynamic commentary of baduk matches, No published Orin (올인 All In) after ten years of preparation, a novel inspired by the true story of professional baduk player Jimmy Cha.

2. Writing

No's 2003 novel Orin follows the life of a man who conquered Las Vegas with 18 dollars, rising to become a world-class poker player. The protagonist is modeled on Jimmy Cha (Korean name Ch'a Min-su), who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Fujitsu Cup representing the US in 1989. Cha the baduk player took up poker after meeting and training with poker theorist Chip Johnson. Orin depicts Cha's meteoric rise to poker fame after struggling through clashes with the mafia, divorce, and addiction.
