Whisper of Radiance

Jeong Hyun-jong's poetry embodies an era's consciousness that views human history as "a state of lacking." He believes that the essential purpose of poetry is to fill this void. This conviction is consistently reflected throughout his works, leading many readers to interpret his poetry as resistance against an oppressive reality. His approach is proactive: he sings of a vibrant will to live, yearns for communication with all beings, and relies on the fullness of life. Thus, his poems feel genuine, as though born of real-world experience, rather than contrived artifice.

In his ninth poetry collection, Whisper of Radiance, Jeong abandons the authoritative consciousness that always seeks to impose meanings upon things. Instead, he becomes an innocent, playful participant who immerses himself in the essence of the world.

Jeong Hyun-jong

Born in Seoul in 1939, Jeong debuted in May 1964 when his work was recommended for inclusion in the inaugural issue of Contemporary Literature. In 1965, after graduating from university, he formally entered the literary scene with Solo Dance and Songs of Summer and Winter, both recommended in the third issue of Contemporary Literature.

His poetry collections include The Dreams of Things, My Uncle the Star, Like a Ball That Bounces Back Even After Falling, There Isn’t Much Time to Love, A Flower, The Trees of the World, My Thirst, My Spring, Intolerable, and more. Jeong has received numerous accolades, including the Korean Writers’ Award, Yeonam Literary Award, Yi Sang Literary Award, Contemporary Literature Award, Daesan Literary Award, Midang Literary Award, and the Gyeongam Academic Award.
