For this uncle, raised by his grandfather as an outsider who subsisted on humble fare like snowballs, Bruce Lee represented a lifeline. Yet, the uncle’s destiny proves arduous, as he remains forever on the fringes, unable to attain genuine recognition or mainstream success.

We follow the poignant saga of a man who trails in the footsteps of Bruce Lee but never ascends to the pinnacles of fame. Instead, he finds himself trapped in a life characterized by mimicry, emulation, plagiarism, and imitation. This narrative unfolds against the backdrop of South Korea’s industrialization in the 1970s, the era of military dictatorship and democratic upheaval in the 1980s, and the advent of full-scale capitalism in the 1990s.

Cheon Myeong-kwan천명관

Cheon`s first published work, “Frank and I,” is an absurd and hilarious story about the narrator’s unemployed husband who goes to Canada to meet his cousin Frank, and ends up meeting another Frank who happens to be a Los Angeles gang leader. His first novel, Whale, spins a wry, epic tale about a country girl who transforms herself into an entrepreneur in the city. His sophomore novel, Modern Family, featuring a motley crew of family members, is narrated by a middle-aged son who has been unemployed for the past 10 years ever since his debut film flopped.
