Description 작품 소개

The Old Diary is the latest short story collection by Lee Seung-U, a writer who has found unparalleled success in nearly thirty years of inquiry into the fundamental problems of life, performed with an abstractly religious coloration seldom seen in Korean literature. The writer's weighty meditations on humanity and the novel remain as deep as ever, but the external layer of the book has become realer and friendlier than before. This collection holds 9 stories in total, including the titular The Old Diary. The narrator of The Old Diary is consumed by his guilt over his father's death. As a child he subconsciously thinks, "I wish my father would disappear." And that day, his father does not return. He turns to writing as a means to escape the sense of guilt that refuses to be escaped. Guilty conscience and ethical consciousness bear, like his many works, a religious coloration. In Lee Seung-U's stories, problems of guilt or ethics overlap with the problems of writing. In reading The Old Diary, his audience will come to find themselves uncovering the old diaries buried deep within their own memories, and reexamining both the guilt at their own core and their present, precarious everyday lives.

Author Bio 작가 소개

Lee Seung-U, a former student of theology, made his literary debut in 1981 with the novella A Portrait of Erysichthon. Throughout his career, Lee has maintained an interest in theological and metaphysical issues, which is reflected in his writing style that meticulously depicts the inner workings of the human soul. His works deal with questions about morals arising in quotidian life as well as more universal issues concerning God, salvation, and guilt. In particular, Lee’s novels since 2000 have inquired into the meaning of reality and the everyday, thereby bringing together the sacred and the secular, and the mind and the body. Published translations of his books include The Reverse Side of Life (Peter Owen, 2005), La vie rêvée des plantes (Gallimard, 2009), Ici comme ailleurs (Gallimard, 2013), and The Private Life of Plants (Dalkey Archive, 2015).
