Description 작품 소개

Tower (SF Literature)

“Beanstalk” is a colossal 674-story skyscraper with a solid structure measuring five kilometers in length and width. This building is not only a sprawling metropolis but also a solemn nation in its own right. The six stories in this collection take place within this setting, employing the principles of real-world mechanics to explore the imagination of three-dimensional space.

The Three Mobilized Wise Men tells the story of labeling premium liquors and studying the power dynamics within the building. Amitabha in the Square and Elevator Activation Practice examine the principles of everyday wars. The narrative of The Taklamakan Delivery Incident unfolds from an unexpected online publication of a letter seeking someone lost in the desert. These stories, borrowing religious elements, depict the tension between nature and civilization, highlighting the transcendence of life and humanity—resonating deeply with everyone living on Earth.

The extensive use of metaphors and allegories is another defining feature of the work. The title Beanstalk is inspired by the British folktale Jack and the Beanstalk. The Three Mobilized Wise Men reimagines the story of the “Three Wise Men” blessing the birth of Jesus. Amitabha in the Square draws upon the Buddhist concept of Amitabha delivering souls to salvation, while Sharia-Compliant explores the Islamic system of religious law. Furthermore, the concept of the skyscraper evokes metaphors like the “Tower of Babel,” leaving a lasting impression. The understated satire and humor embedded in the collection have also been widely praised. Memorable elements, such as an actor-turned-dog who becomes a disruptive factor in the power dynamics, or an elephant stationed to maintain public order, unsettle and baffle the indigenous inhabitants of the building. These humorous touches enhance the readability of the work.

Bae Myung-hoon began his writing career in 2005 with his novel Smart D, which earned recognition in the Science Fiction Grand Prize competition. His works include the serialized novel Tower, short story collections such as Goodbye, Artificial Being!, Your Honor, Mr. President, and Art and Gravitational Acceleration, as well as novellas like The Proposal and The Straw Bag Machine Style. His full-length novels include God’s Orbit, Concealment, The Bombardment Bistro, The First Breath, and The Archaeologist of the Mind. In 2010, he received the Young Novelist Award from Munhakdongne, a prominent literary organization.
