Description 작품 소개

A World Without Bloody Marys is the third short story collection by stylist Choi Jae-hoon, a master of cutting-edge narrative and a pinnacle of metafiction. This collection intricately weaves the endlessly recurring variations of human life within an ever-turning chain of stories.

Choi Jae-hoon has since garnered a devoted readership through his works that blend various genre elements such as fantasy, mystery, detective fiction, and science fiction, creating a unique and refreshing narrative experience. In addition to his short story collections, he has published three full-length novels (Seven Cats' Eyes, Butterfly Sleep, and Chains of the Angel) and a novella (Just a Murderer), leading readers into worlds of extraordinary imagination. Since his debut, he has been recognized for his exceptional talent in "inducing readers' imagination through techniques akin to detective and suspense novels, then leading them into the labyrinth of the story. His works make readers reflect on the suppressed emotions within the human psyche, opening up new possibilities for Korean fiction" (Judges of the 44th Hankook Ilbo Literary Award, Do Jeong-il, Hong Jeong-seon, and Shin Kyung-sook). He has also been praised as "a writer who has continually and seriously explored the role of imagination and literature in today's world" (Judges of the 26th Han Moo-sook Literary Award, Kim Joo-yeon, Oh Jung-hee, and Seo Ha-jin), consistently pushing the boundaries of literary experimentation.

Choi's latest collection demonstrates his impeccable skill in meticulous structuring and rich vocabulary, resulting in a concise, polished prose style. The narrative seamlessly flows across multiple layers of structure, interlocking with sharp thematic awareness, drawing readers swiftly into what can be described as "Choi Jae-hoon's unique literary landscape."

In this collection, Choi Jae-hoon examines the issues of human consciousness and inner turmoil in a society where science and technology have advanced to extreme levels. Through remarkably detailed descriptions, he gradually unfolds the story, fully immersing the reader while presenting characters at critical crossroads. Focusing on the theme of 'memory,' which is caught in a cycle of destruction and rebirth, he reexamines human free will, capturing the exact moment when we enter the irreversible passage of time. The novel illustrates that the greatest variable pushing situations to the extreme in a highly advanced technological society is not a system malfunction but rather a human being imbued with a soul. This fragile, ambiguous, impulsive yet bold paradox—a being who is at once a source of anxiety and new possibilities—is the very essence of humanity, Choi's stories suggest. His works vividly depict the countless transformations of human life as it continuously generates the next narrative in a quest to unravel the mysteries of existence. Ironically, he posits, as stated in one of his sentences, that "this ambiguity may be the only true value of the soul."

Choi Jaehoon began his literary career by winning the Literature and Society’s New Writers Award in 2007. The winner of the 2011 Hankook Ilbo Literary Award and the 2021 Hahn Moo-Sook Literary Award, Choi has published two short story collections, The Castle of Baron Curval and Dangerous Metaphor, and four novels, The Seven Eyes of Cats, Butterfly Sleep, The Chain of Angels, and Just a Murderer.
