1. Life

The following year, he won the Daehan Ilbo New Writer`s Award with his poem `Cheomseongdae` (첨성대 Cheomseongdae). In 1982 he also debuted as a fiction writer, winning the 1982 Chosun Ilbo New Writer`s Award with the short story `Wiryeongje` (위령제 Memorial Service), but his career has focused mostly on poetry. He has published 16 collections of poetry, as well as a novel, essay collections, and children`s books. He is the recipient of the the Seoul City Literary Award, the Chong Chi-Yong Literary Award, the Pyeonun Literary Award, the Sanghwa Poetry Award, the Gongcho Literary Award, the Dong Seo Literary Prize, and the Sowol Poetry Prize, among others.

2. Writing

Jeong Ho-seung is one of Korea`s most widely read and loved poets living today, having cemented his reputation as the successor to Korea`s most beloved poets, Sowol and Midang, since the 1990s. His poems express the joys and sorrows of life in ways that are immediately accessible to people of all ages. Jeong`s themes include societal schisms, poverty and alienation, but his work presents these themes with lyrical grace and innocence that removes any trace of hectoring. Jeong intentionally focuses on suffering in the hope that in despair some hope can be found and that this can become the basis for a more successful future. The poet also depicts the resentment and enmity that stirs in the hearts of farmers and workers whose very roots have been taken from them in a sterile South Korean society, and their attempts to resist and overcome these conditions. He spoke for the masses, praising people for their willful and courageous attitude toward life and helping them believe in their future. Jeong`s style of writing has often been described as being similar to traditional Korean folk songs or popular ballads. In fact, some of his poems have been set to music and released on the albums of such musicians as Yang Hee-eun, An Chi-hwan, and Kim Kwang-seok.
