Author Bio 작가 소개

Kim Hain is a South Korean novelist and poet born in 1962 in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province. He rose to fame with his 2000 novel Gukhwakkot hyanggi (국화꽃 향기 The Scent of Chrysanthemums), which was adapted for the silver screen, television, and stage, joining the ranks of major pop cultural reference in the 2000s. Much of Kim's work has been translated for the Chinese market. Translations of Kim's work paved the way for other works of popular Korean fiction in the early 2000s, at the beginning of the Korean wave in China. The translation of Kim's Gukhwakkot hyanggi appeared in China in 2002, recording 6th place on the list of the 10 most popular novels in China that year.

1. Life

Kim's fiction usually follows the formula of a classical love story told through melodrama. His Sunsuui sidae (순수의 시대 The Age of Innocence) (2006) stands out for its depiction of Korea's turbulent 1980s while staying true to the author's usual form. Kim's student years in the 1980s were a time of institutionalized violence sanctioned by the military dictatorship that was courageously opposed by many, sometimes at the expense of their lives. According to the author's note to Sunsuui sidae, one of Kim's underclassmen immolated himself while protesting for democracy, an incident which left a deep mark on Kim. The author has stated that he hopes the novel will remind the generation who lived through the 1980s of their youth, while introducing a generation of younger readers to the realities of Korean society in the 1980s.
