“Finally, the hands on the Botchan Karakuri Clock were heading toward the top of the hour. Excited, the tourists began to count down in unison. “Nine! Eight! Seven! Six!” Jonghyeok and Haruko joined in, “Four! Three! Two! One!” A new era was beginning.” ( 《춘자의 남경》 , 연변인민출판사 , 2018 / Chunja’s Nanjing , Seoul Selection, 2022)
Kim Hyeok is a Korean Chinese (Joseonjok) writer who draws on historical events such as the Gando Massacre, the Nanjing Massacre, and the issue of Japanese military “comfort women” to explore, through fiction, the possibility that a “new time of reconciliation” can emerge from reflection on and reckoning with the past.
