Kim Mingi was born in Daejeon. He graduated from Chung-Ang University's creative writing department. Inspired by the demand for reader-friendly fiction, he co-founded the publishing house Yeolim, through which he edited and published numerous works of popular fiction. Kim Mingi's works celebrate true love, employing an uncluttered style and making use of natural images as a metaphor for innocence and vows. With a focus on the themes of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation, Kim's work veers toward the romantic, often relying on lyrical descriptions of nature. Nunmulkkot (눈물꽃 Tear Blossoms) (2001), for example, begins with descriptions of the seaside setting, with recurring natural images such as snow for innocence and plum blossoms for vows or promises. Neoreul jikineun namu (너를 지키는 나무 The Tree Watching Over You) (2004) is another example, with the image of white fringetree recurring throughout the novel. In contrast with his early works that prioritized the depiction of such universal themes over formal or stylistic innovation, Kim's 2014 novel Ireobeorin suyoil (잃어버린 수요일 Lost Wednesday) is the author's foray into the fast-paced narrative of detective fiction. Featuring a female protagonist bent on revenge after becoming the victim of a political incident, Ireobeorin suyoil whisks the reader through a trail of love, desire, and betrayal.
