Born in Busan in 1985, Kim Tongsik dropped out of middle school and worked manual jobs such as printing, cutting, and tiling. While working at a foundry with his uncle, he took to reading at night after work. Searching for "how to write" on the internet, Kim found an article giving the advice to write simple sentences, using ellipses and conjunctions sparingly. The story he knocked up following the article's guidelines quickly gained traction on the internet, and Kim began posting new stories regularly, about every three days, relying on the comments to improve his grammar and writing style.
2. Writing
Beginning in 2016, over the course of three years Kim wrote over 500 short stories, which were published in his first collection, Hoesaegingan (회색인간 Grey Man). The collection of microfiction first published on the internet gained an instant following as the work of an exciting newcomer, going to six reprints within three months. Kim Dong-sik's microfiction is characterized by a speedy narrative, unusual subject matter, and often employs unexpected twists. His brief, entertaining stories are not restricted to genre, spanning from horror to thriller, fantasy, and romance. The oft-featured unexpected ending in Kim's fiction does not have the elaborate construction of a novel, but relying on the accessible form of microfiction elicits an instant reaction from the reader. His Sesangeseo gajang yakan yogoe (세상에서 가 장 약한 요괴 The Weakest Monster in the World) has been published in Russian and Japanese. He has also authored a writing guide, Chodanpyeon soseol sseugi (초단편 소설 쓰기 Writing Microfiction).
