Description 작품 소개

Life’s cruel joke

and the beautiful patterns of life drawn by those enduring such tragedy

This collection of short stories by Kwon Yeo-sun , who has firmly established herself in the Korean literary world with remarkable achievements such as winning the 47th Dong-in Literature Award, explores the meaning of life through vivid and chilling prose that capture the haunting, incomprehensible moments of past lives that refuse to be forgotten. When life’s cruel joke pushes a man to the brink, how can he endure such misfortune? Kwon, renowned for masterfully illustrating how even the slightest crack can shatter a life, poignantly portrays the sublimity of those enduring such tragedy.

When life plays a joke, a man either falls ill or turns to drink...

A solitary greeting to a drunkard who fell flat on his face in a wretched life

This book features drinking scenes quite frequently. The reasons vary, but the characters drink either out of habit or to endure something. Among the scenes, the most overwhelming is when Yeong-gyeong of "Spring Night", an alcoholic who turned to drinking after losing her child , reads Kim Su-Young's poem aloud while drunk. Kwon's language painfully portrays the despair of someone hitting rock bottom and retraces the actions of a tipsy character, chillingly capturing the drunkard’s fragile inner state, teetering on the edge of collapse.
