Author Bio 작가 소개

Han Changhoon (born 1963) is a South Korean author.

1. Life

Han Changhoon was born in 1963 in the seaport town of Yeosu, and graduated from Hannam University with a degree in regional development. Han made his literary debut in 1992, winning the Daejeon Ilbo New Writer’s Contest with the story `Dat` (닻 Anchor). He has since received the Hankyoreh Literary Award for Honghap (홍합 Mussels), the Violet Prize for the People`s Writer for Cheongchungareul bulleoyo (청춘가를 불러요Song of Youth), and the Heo Gyun Literary Award and Yosan Literary Award for Naneun yeogiga jota (나는 여기가 좋다 I Like it Here). He wrote the screenplay for the movie Unforgettable (순정) based on a story from his novel, Seom, naneun sesang kkeuteul sanda (섬, 나는 세상 끝을 산다Island, I Live at the End of the World). His works in translation include Naneun yeogiga jota in Russian. Han is known for his frank and humorous portrayal of life in small towns and farming and fishing villages, featuring the dialects of Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces instead of the standard dialect of big cities.

2. Writing

Perhaps due to the fact that he was born and raised in the seaport town of Yeosu, at the southern end of Korea, sea and island figure as important motifs in Han`s fiction—often as embodiments of nostalgia. The characters in Han`s works cherish the memory of the lonely seascape in their hearts: blue-black waves, desolate, wind-swept beach, fishermen`s leathery hands—these images constitute the picture of home for those who lead sorrowful lives in the impoverished countryside or at the periphery of glittering cities. Seom, naneun sesang kkeuteul sanda features twelve stories narrated by a man who lives alone on an island. A woman visits the island in remembrance of her lost love; an old man lost at sea drifts as far down south as the island of Jeju; an abusive husband is reunited with his runaway wife on a moonlit beach—in these stories, the sea is not a mere backdrop but the very manifestation of life that offers an insight into the secret of existence. Han refrains from sententiousness despite the fact that his works explore the suffering of the socially and economically underprivileged: with his characteristic humility and sensitivity, Han discovers beauty and psychological subtleties inherent in every situation and allows his characters an amount of optimism and ultimate faith in the goodness of human nature with which they brave the difficulties of life.
