Kim Iryop (1896-1971) was a women's rights activist, journalist, poet, and Zen Buddhist nun active during the Japanese occupation of Korea. Her pen name and Dharma name, Iryop (also spelled Ilyeop), is a homage to the Japanese writer Higuchi Ichiyō. She made her literary debut while studying in Japan, and founded the magazine Sin Yeoja (신여자 New Woman) upon her return to Korea in 1920, becoming a leading figure in the feminist "new woman" movement. She also served on the panel for the first Miss Korea pageant held in 1931. Writing for Buddhist publications in 1927, she became interested in Buddhism, becoming a nun in 1933. After taking the tonsure, her published works took on a Buddhist flavor.
