This collection of short stories by Choi Jae-hoon was published in 2010. Eight short stories feature in this collection, including “The Unknown Case of Sherlock Holmes,” “A Stuffed Shadow,” “By the way, Maria,” “An Excuse for a Monster,” and the title story. The author develops the plots in various ways, by changing the plot at will according to a rumormonger’s needs, borrowing the form of an epistle or monodrama, or having all the characters from the story collection appear in one place. In these ways, the stories demonstrate the author’s subversive thinking about the narrative form.

Choi Jae-hoon최제훈

Choi Jae-hoon (최제훈; born 1973) is a South Korean writer. Choi Jae-hoon was born in Seoul and graduated from Yonsei University's Department of Business Administration and Seoul Institute of the Arts' Department of Creative Writing. He made his debut in 2007 with the short story “The Castle of Baron Curval,” which won the Literature and Society New Literature Award.
