Description 작품 소개
This is a multi-volume, five-part saga by Pak Kyongni, who wrote it between 1969 and 1994. Following the rise and fall of a landowning family in Pyeongsari from the final years of the Korean Empire to the liberation in 1945, the work is considered a fictional write-up of modern Korean history. Major events in the work include the Donghak Revolution, the Japanese colonial period, and the liberation of August 1945.
The work is composed of 20-volumes, and the story is divided into five parts. Part one introduces the Choe family of Pyeongsari during the tail end of the Korean Empire, a period of societal transition and the erosion of Korean sovereignty by Japanese colonial expansionism. The second part deals with Korean society in Gando in the 1910s, while the third, set against the backdrop of the March 1st Movement and the Wonsan Strike of March 1929, follows Choe Seohui and the revival of her family, as well as the process of Japanese colonial capitalization.
The fourth part depicts the various strands – nationalist, communist, and anarchist – of the independence movement, focusing on Gilsang’s release from prison in the Sino-Japanese War of 1937. The fifth and final part is set between 1940 and August 1945, and deals with the death of Song Gwansu, the dissolution of Gilsang’s independence movement group, and the outbreak of the Pacific War.
In this universal tale of suffering and survival, the author conveys the han of the Korean people during a period of historical turbulence, as well as their enduring ability to live.
〈Land 18〉 is the fifth part and third volume of a five-part, 20-volume work.
