Since Seoul was named the World Design Capital in 2010, a design craze has swept across local governments, driven by the belief that design boosts urban competitiveness. However, the author argues that in the rush for public design and development, true urban identity is being lost. By examining six major metropolitan cities in Korea, the author highlights the tension between real estate speculation and genuine efforts to improve quality of life, stressing the need for historical and cultural context in urban planning.

Author Bio 작가 소개

Kim Minsoo김민수

He was born in Seoul and graduated from the Department of Applied Arts at Seoul National University, where he also completed graduate studies. Afterward, he earned a master's degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in the United States and a Ph.D. from the graduate school of New York University. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Design at Seoul National University.
