Uncovering Buried Memories: An Excavator’s Journey
The fourth installment in Moonji Novel Classics, a curated series of modern classics, is Father’s Land, a collection of short stories by Lim Chulwoo. Lim, who made his debut in 1981, has continuously published works and won numerous literary awards over the course of his 37-year career. Father’s Land comprises eleven short stories written during the author’s late twenties, between 1980 and 1983. In this revised edition, the story “Gokdu Sports Day” has been meticulously edited, with careful changes made to its words and sentences. The works included in this collection offer a glimpse into the literary origins of Lim Chulwoo, an established name in Korea’s literary scene, who remains actively engaged in his craft and skillfully weaves narratives of memory and experience.
Lim Chulwoo’s unique style, which explores the anxiety, sadness, and anger of individuals through their experiences and memories shaped by social conditions such as poverty and violence, is vividly present in his first short story collection. Father’s Land touches on major historical events in Korea, ranging from the massacres between North and South before and after the Korean War to the brutal history of Gwangju in the 1980s. The scene in the title story “Father’s Land,” where the remains of the war dead buried in the ground are discovered, is particularly poignant. Many of Lim Chulwoo’s later works can be seen as an excavation of sorts, bringing to light events that have been buried deep beneath the surface. This explains his nickname, “excavator of memories,” as dubbed by literary critic Kim Hyeongjung.
Furthermore, the writer’s skill in unraveling the stories of narrators from diverse backgrounds—such as people living in small provincial cities, those who have moved to Seoul, or those who have returned to their hometowns—with restrained emotion continues to hold readers closely to his perspective. In doing so, Lim successfully illustrates the various forms of ordinary citizens’ lives while vividly coloring the faint memories of the recent past.
